On October 17, I appeared on Mary Jane Popp’s radio program on the station KAHI out of California.
Mary Jane is a legend in the radio game and I had a blast.
I really enjoy live radio. This is because:
of Marshall McLuhan's concept of the "discarnate effect" in radio broadcasting. it has to do with the unique psychological experience of being a radio guest.
McLuhan suggested that electronic media like radio creates a unique state where the physical body and voice become separated or "discarnate." When speaking on live radio, your voice is indeed simultaneously present in countless locations - in cars, homes, and workplaces across the broadcast range. This creates what McLuhan described as a kind of omnipresence, where your consciousness extends beyond your physical body.
This creates an exhilarating feeling, not unlike being "high" - and is attributed to this unusual state of being. Your voice and thoughts are reaching directly into the minds of listeners, creating an intimate yet distributed presence. Unlike normal conversation where you're grounded in a single physical space, radio broadcasting puts you in an ethereal state where your voice exists everywhere at once within the broadcast range.
This effect is particularly potent in live radio because of the real-time nature of the medium - there's an immediacy and energy knowing that your words are entering thousands of consciousness simultaneously, creating what McLuhan would call a kind of "acoustic space" that transcends physical boundaries.
